The Girl Who Played with Fire, Stieg Larsson
Review by Vivian :)
How many stars do you rate the book?
4.5 of 5, because it ended on a cliffhanger and I don’t have enough time to pick up the next book immediately
How many stars do you rate the author?
3 of 5, because he died and won’t be able to continue writing
What is your favorite quote?
“There are no innocents. There are, however, different degrees of responsibility.” — Lisbeth Salander
Do you like the ending? What would you change about it?
I enjoyed the culmination to the ending, not especially the ending itself. But the fact that I don’t like the ending is based on the fact that it’s a cliffhanger and I have to read the next book, when in fact I don’t really have the time to devote to reading it. One of the characters says (I’m paraphrasing) that whatever happens to Lisbeth in the end, it will be on her own terms. And I love that she has the power to make her own future.
One thing I kept looking for while reading was the AHA moment where everything comes together. After reading the first book of the trilogy, I started to understand that it’s Larsson’s method of writing. I would have liked a little more subterfuge, and a little more eureka!, which is not a criticism of the writing style, but more of the plot development.
But changing the plot would mean changing everything about the book, so I’ll take back my criticism and say I loved the book, wouldn’t change anything about it.
Any life lessons learned?
You are always in charge of your future. You can’t change the past. A tiny teenaged-looking woman can beat up anyone if she goes into Terminator Mode.
Final thoughts?
I love Rooney Mara’s depiction of Lisbeth, but I hope the directors do a better job in the movie adaptation of TGWPWF than they did in TGWTDT. Also, I’m going to go dig up some of other Stieg Larsson’s works after I finish TGWKTHN. ;)
