The lovely Jordan sent me a message to tell me about this awesome project she’s doing for school!
Copied from the About page (forgive me for not paraphrasing):
So what is this?
Basically, this blog is created from a project that myself and a few others are working on for a college course. The objective is to reduce carbon emissions in some way. Through research, we have found that going vegetarian is a great way to reduce carbon emissions. Going completely vegetarian, however, is very difficult for many people who don’t cook their own meals, live in college, or have been eating meat their whole lives. However, we figured going vegetarian one day a week, for 8 weeks (a mere total of 8 days) can make a large difference provided that we get enough people involved. This idea is more of a “flexitarian” idea, which involves meatless days. This can be exemplified by “meatless monday” or other things like that. I know some people who do meatless weekends, or alternative days of being a vegetarian.
How does becoming vegetarian reduce carbon emissions?
Although it is hard to quantify, there are many resources that come to the same conclusion about reductions in emissions. One website we used as a group figured that one person alone doing our plan of avoiding meat one day a week for 8 weeks can save 65.09 pounds of carbon per person! That is about the equivalent of over 3 gallons of gasoline ! The more people that we get involved, the more we can save. Isn’t that awesome ?
How do I get involved?
Well, it’s really easy! We have a pledge to sign. On the pledge, you sign how many days a week you pledge to go vegetarian, how many days a week you already eat meat, and sign your electronic signature ! It’s that easy. However, if you are already a full-time vegetarian, you can’t really join :/ We are trying to measure the carbon that will be emitted by the project alone, and you have already been a vegetarian, so it defeats the purpose in a way. Also, if you already do meatless days, I am asking that you give up an additional day than what you already do. So it is an additional sacrifice to do the project.
Why should I join?
If you aren’t convinced enough by our carbon argument, just know this is something awesome for your body! It’s a good way to transition into full-vegetarianism and something beneficial for the rest of your life. You can also be a part of something much greater and really help us be a solution to saving the planet !
Can I invite others?
Absolutely! If there is anyone you know that would like to do this, invite them! I encourage you to spread the word, this is a good cause, and is worth your time. It’s only one day, for a few weeks. You can do it :) I have this tumblr, a facebook group, a facebook page to like, and a twitter! Use all the social media and get the word out!
How can I actively participate?
Something kind of important to us is proof of participation. I’m not asking for a picture of every meal, but maybe a picture of so of your vegetarian meal, and your not vegetarian meal! Also, if you have any video submissions that’d be great :) You can submit here, on the facebook, or email your submissions to
vegetarian4reduction@gmail.com we promote active users and people who really support us!
Lastly, what else can I do to help?
The last thing that you can do to help would be to find other ways to go green for the environment, like buying locally, in season, and organic. Share your stories, and let us know your contributions!
I’m going vegetarian 4 days a week! That’s 12 meals out of 21. Won’t be easy. Are you with me?

Where in the world are you?
